“When anybody asks, 'What are you writing about now?' if I try to reply, the book-in-the-works sounds so idiotic to me that I think, 'Why am I trying to write that puerile junk?' So now I give up; if I could talk about it, I wouldn't have to write it."

Hi, My Name Is Geekwif...

...and I'm a podcast-aholic. Yes, it's true. I have discovered the wonderful world of podcasts.

And they are a-w-e-s-o-m-e.

Some time ago, I had heard of podcasts from a few people out there, mostly people I didn't really know. They sounded to me like radio bits or something and I didn't really understand what was so appealing about them.

Then, maybe a year or so ago, I got curious enough to go looking on iTunes and see what was out there in the world of podcasts. And whaddya know – there were podcasts for just about any topic you could want, and they were almost all free. I subscribed to a few just to try them out, but never really got into it. It wasn't long before I forgot I had ever downloaded anything.

And then ...

My Geek mentioned one day, a month or two ago, that he really would like to get an iPod. He had heard you could get used ones in good condition on eBay for great prices. We agreed we would both like to have one, so he found two that looked good, bid on them, and won. Within a week we both had our slightly-less-than-new, shiny iPods.

I plugged mine in (it's a totally cool limey green color!) and began loading the music from my iTunes playlists. While I was doing so I noticed a button at the top of the screen that said "podcasts". It had been waiting there all along for this moment, knowing its time would come, patiently waiting for this fateful day.

I clicked, and there were the forgotten podcasts. With no thought of any possible harm, I added them to the list of items to sync with my new iPod. Once the sync was complete, I queued one up and started listening.

That moment, my friends, was my downfall, and because of it my life will never be the same. It wasn't long before I was listening to and watching podcasts about gardening, crocheting, crafting, eBaying, farming, do-it-yourself-ing, writing and so much more.

Since we have dial-up at home, it can take several hours to download a single podcast, so on Friday nights when we go to dinner at the restaurant with free wi-fi, I immediately plug in my laptop when we are seated and start downloading more podcasts while we eat.

It's a sickness, I know, but for the time being it's a sickness of which I have no desire to be cured. In the past few weeks I have learned how to hill potatoes, rid my garden of Japanese beetles, cut down a tree, smoke a turkey, make beer, and a plethora of other skills that I would probably never have learned if I had not discovered the wonder of podcasts. (Never mind that I'm not growing potatoes this year, don't have Japanese beetles, don't own a chainsaw, don't have a smoker, and don't drink beer.)

So if I go AWOL; if you are unable to contact me by phone, email, blog comment or any other means of communication; if you knock on my door and I do not answer; if my blog posts are few and far between, you may safely assume that I am attending to my latest obsession.

And if you're interested in checking out some podcasts yourself, I'd be happy to point you in the direction of a few of my favorites.

Just beware ... they are seriously addictive.
